How long from Tesla order to VIN, by country and factory.
For Model Y, the median wait from order to VIN ran from 17 days in the United States to 114 days in Colombia. Where you live largely decides which factory builds your car, and the factory makes a large difference: Model Y cars from Shanghai got a VIN about six weeks sooner than cars from Berlin.

In short
- Japan and Norway waited under a month. Spain, Italy and Colombia waited more than three months.
- Germany, the Netherlands and Austria sat at about two months. France waited about four weeks longer.
- Model Y cars from Shanghai got a VIN about six weeks sooner than cars from Berlin, then took longer to arrive.
What Tesla says about the wait
Tesla does not publish an order-to-VIN time. Its US ordering page says delivery timing varies by model, location and current availability. The European and Colombian help pages say the estimated date depends on your configuration and may change, and that changing your order can delay it.
In the European help pages, Tesla says it will contact you once your car has a VIN and is ready for delivery. Owners often see the VIN earlier than that. On Dutch and German forums, some describe a VIN that showed up two to four weeks before the car was built.
What the app can measure is the gap between the order date and the day a VIN first appears on the order. The tables below use that gap. They are neighbour waits from other app users, not dates from Tesla's calendar.
Order to VIN by country
| Country | Orders | Median |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 828 | 17 days |
| Japan | 440 | 21 days |
| Norway | 305 | 29 days |
| Switzerland | 106 | 42 days |
| Germany | 1,284 | 60 days |
| Netherlands | 206 | 61 days |
| Austria | 135 | 61 days |
| Belgium | 120 | 67 days |
| United Kingdom | 190 | 69 days |
| Canada | 471 | 81 days |
| Denmark | 161 | 81 days |
| Romania | 116 | 81 days |
| France | 2,106 | 88 days |
| Spain | 132 | 101 days |
| Italy | 80 | 101 days |
| Colombia | 361 | 114 days |
Germany, the Netherlands and Austria sit within a day of each other at about two months. France, the largest group in the table, waited about four weeks longer than Germany. Spain and Italy took more than three months, and Colombia took almost four.
Each country figure mixes every trim, colour and wheel choice, and order dates from 2024 to 2026. A popular configuration in a busy month can be much quicker or much slower than the median for its country.

Berlin
Built in Europe
- 81 days from order to VIN
- 17 days from VIN to delivery in Europe
- Most reach buyers by road or rail
Shanghai
Shipped to Europe
- 41 days from order to VIN
- 26 days from VIN to delivery in Europe
- A sea crossing still ahead after the VIN
Buyers in the United States get a car from a plant in their own country, and they had the shortest wait for both models. Model Y cars from Shanghai got a VIN about six weeks sooner than cars from Berlin. A Shanghai car still has a sea crossing ahead of it after the VIN, so it arrives later than that head start suggests. The guide on what happens after a VIN has the VIN-to-delivery times per factory.
The two tables slice the same orders in different ways. Berlin's 81 days covers every country it supplies, including the large French group, and one country can get cars from more than one factory.
Why some countries wait longer
The data gives the wait per country but no reasons. Tesla, the press and owner forums explain part of it.
- Japan is quick on paper. Its cars come by ship from Shanghai, and in one April 2026 thread on a Japanese owners' forum, buyers said VINs came in a rush a few days before a ship docked, and sometimes after it had arrived. By then the car is already built and at sea.
- Canada switched to Model Y cars from Berlin in late summer 2025, after tariffs closed the route from China. Canada's median of 81 days matches Berlin's, although some Canadian orders in the data date from before the switch.
- Colombia is a new market for Tesla, with sales starting in November 2025. In May 2026 the national consumer authority told Tesla to stop presenting tentative delivery dates as firm. It had found more than 1,800 cars due in February and March still undelivered at the end of April.
- In August 2026, French owners on a Model Y forum reported estimates moving from late August to November through January. In the same weeks, Dutch owners reported a wave of VINs for orders from April to June.
The sources for this guide do not explain why Spain and Italy wait longer than their neighbours. Their samples are also among the smallest in the table, so treat those two medians with some caution.
Why a later order can get a VIN first
This question comes up often in Canadian and Dutch threads. Tesla does not explain how it matches cars to orders. Owner reports point to batches: VINs arrive in waves for orders with the same configuration, or for cars on the same ship, and the order date does not seem to set the sequence.
Factory is the clearest case. On Dutch forums, owners report European Model Y orders being filled from Shanghai as well as Berlin. Shanghai orders reached a VIN in a median of 41 days and Berlin orders in 81, so an order placed weeks later can still get its VIN first. It does not always get the car first.
The end of a quarter can bring a wave of its own. In mid-September 2026, German owners reported a large wave of VINs, including for orders whose delivery estimate still pointed to November or December. Some orders from April were still waiting.
What you can do while you wait
- Change your configuration only if you mean it. Tesla says changes can delay the order, and design edits lock once the VIN is assigned.
- If timing matters more than the exact spec, ask about cars in inventory. Tesla points buyers there when the estimate is too late.
- Compare with orders like yours where you can. The app's community figures show typical waits for other buyers by model.
- Do not read too much into a moving estimate before the VIN. Owners in every forum thread cited here saw it move several times.

What these numbers do not show
- Inventory and custom orders are mixed. The order data has no clean flag for cars bought from stock, so they sit in the same figures as cars built to order.
- Changes to the order are invisible here. The data does not record trade-ins or a change of delivery location, both of which can move the date.
- Only app users are counted. They chose to track their order, and most are in France, Germany and the United States.
- The VIN date is when the app first saw it. That can be a little after Tesla assigned it, and sometimes before it appears in the Tesla app.
About the numbers
The numbers are medians from orders that people track in Delivery Status for Tesla, read on 15 October 2026, for orders placed from 2024 to 2026. They cover app users rather than every Tesla buyer. Each figure mixes trims, colours, and inventory and custom orders, and the factory is read from the first three characters of the VIN.
