How accurate is Tesla's estimated delivery window?

Tesla shows a delivery window as soon as you order, and it moves for almost everyone. In orders tracked in the app, about half arrived inside the first window, and the window got much more reliable once a VIN appeared.

Order history comparing old and new values in the iPhone app

In short

  • 52% of delivered orders arrived inside the first window Tesla showed (654 orders placed from 8 July). 31% arrived earlier and 17% later.
  • When a car came after the window, it was a median 7 days after the last day.
  • Delivered orders went through a median of 5 different windows before handover (2,292 orders).
  • The window shown when the VIN appeared held for 67% of Berlin-built cars in Europe (757 orders) and 53% of Shanghai-built cars (570).
  • At the last quarter end, more than 95% of European orders with a VIN and a window ending by 30 September were delivered by then. Without a VIN two weeks out, fewer than 20 of 122 made it.
  • In France, 37% of open orders now show a window that ends in 2027 (779 orders).

What does Tesla say about the window?

Tesla calls the window an estimate. Its US delivery page says: "Delivery timing estimates are subject to change, and the Tesla app will always reflect the latest details." A note below adds: "Your estimated delivery window may change or temporarily disappear in the Tesla app as production and logistics schedules are updated." [1]

Tesla's European help pages say the estimated date "depends on your configuration" and that "Any order changes may delay your delivery date." [2]

Tesla's Norwegian order agreement says the car can be ready earlier or later than the estimate (our translation). [3]

How often does the first window hold?

About half the time: 52% of 654 delivered orders arrived inside the first window, 31% earlier and 17% later.

How often does Tesla's delivery window change?

Often. The median delivered order saw 5 different windows before handover (2,292 orders). About 1 in 8 saw ten or more. Only about 1 in 20 kept the same window from the first time the app saw it until delivery.

A window narrowing from two months to ten days counts as a change too. The guide on what happens after a VIN found that later moves were usually small (a median of 2 days), while moves earlier were larger. [4]

Is the delivery window more reliable after the VIN?

Yes, in most places. The window shown at VIN held for 67% of Berlin-built cars in Europe and 61% of US-built cars in the US. A VIN means Tesla has matched a car to your order, and the window usually narrows soon after. For open orders in Europe, the median window is 31 days wide without a VIN and 10 days with one. In North America it drops from 35 days to 5.

Berlin cars in Europe travel by road or rail, which may explain why they were the most predictable. Shanghai cars still have weeks at sea after the VIN, and a quarter of them came before the window.

Canada is the exception. Most of the 135 Berlin-built cars delivered there arrived after the window shown at VIN, by a median of a week.

Will my Tesla arrive before the end of the year?

It depends on the country and on the VIN. In France 37% of open orders show a window that ends in 2027, in the US 11%, and in Norway almost none.

Norway's 2027 budget proposes halving the EV VAT exemption on 1 January, adding about 37,500 kroner to most new EVs, and the registration date decides which rule applies. [5] On 21 October the Norwegian Consumer Council told buyers to ask the seller for a written VAT guarantee before signing. [6]

In Norway, Tesla usually delivers to Norway in waves near the end of a quarter, [5] and a window can still move.

The last quarter end shows what a VIN was worth. These are orders that on 15 September had a window ending by 30 September, where the outcome is known:

  • In Europe, more than 95% of orders that already had a VIN were delivered by 30 September (491 orders). Of 122 orders without a VIN, fewer than 20 made it.
  • In North America, 88% of orders with a VIN made it (191 orders), and so did 76% of those without one (98 orders). US orders often get the VIN days before delivery, so a missing one says less.

If you are in Europe and your deadline is 31 December, a VIN by mid-December tells you more than the window does.

What buyers reported this week

Owner posts from 15 to 22 October, paraphrased and unverified.

  • Netherlands: several owners saw a two-month window shrink to about ten days once a VIN appeared, and one window vanished overnight. [7]
  • Germany: on 21 and 22 October, Model 3 buyers saw a VIN appear overnight and then disappear again for many of them. [8] Model Y buyers wrote that registration papers for some cars built around the model change were held up. [9]
  • United States: new Model Y L Launch Series orders now show January to March 2027, and some earlier orders show February to April. [10]
  • Canada: buyers on X reported windows for new Model Y orders moving to March or April 2027. [11]

What can you do while the window moves?

  • Plan around the last day of the window. More cars came before the window than after, and most late cars were under two weeks late.
  • Before the VIN, treat the window as a rough month. After it, plan around it.
  • Check that your loan approval, trade-in offer and any tax deadline still hold at the end of the window, and ask Tesla in writing what happens if the car is late. In Norway, the Consumer Council advises a written VAT guarantee. [6]
  • If the date matters more than the exact spec, look at inventory. Tesla's page points buyers there when the estimate is too late. [1]
  • Get the paperwork done early with the free delivery checklist, so a short-notice appointment is easy to take. [12]

What these numbers do not show

  • The first-window figures only cover orders placed and delivered within about three months. Slow orders are missing, so the real share of late cars is likely higher.
  • When an order stops updating, the app cannot always tell if it was delivered, so those orders are left out of the quarter-end figures.
  • A change is counted when the app saw it. That can be a little after Tesla made it.
  • Only app users are counted. Most of them are in Europe and North America, so small countries have no separate figures.
  • Inventory and custom orders are mixed in.

About the numbers

The numbers come from orders that thousands of buyers track in Delivery Status for Tesla, read on 22 October 2026. Window changes run from July to October 2026. Windows with month names only (such as "November to December") count from the first day of the first month to the last day of the second. The factory is read from the first three characters of the VIN. Any group with fewer than 20 orders is left out.
